Thank you to the SAR Manager for volunteering to do a very challenging job.
However, I think his comments about pulling dozens of dead, drowned people, not wearing life jackets, out of the water raises a bigger issue:
1) The current approach is not working 2) comments like these almost ring of victim blaming 3) Where is the Director of Protective Services on this issue? Safety is his responsibility, not Kamloops SAR.
Drownings are up 54%. While there is no cure for drowning (you're dead), they are entirely preventable.
This event got me thinking a lot about (the lack of) water safety in Kamloops.
I've looked for and thought about Stan Cappis every time I am by the river. I am happy the river gave him up so that his family could get some kind of closure from this terrible event. As a resident of Kamloops, I'd like to apologize to Stan's family and friends for the shitty job the City of Kamloops has done with water safety. He is the main reason I started this society.

Dr. Mthandazo drowned at McArthur Island , a City of Kamloops park. He entered the water to save his son, but drowned in the process.
I assume this is the person who fell out of the boat, identity was never confirmed.
Jatin Garg went in the water to retrieve a ball with friends. Bystanders had to enter the water to rescue them, unfortunately Jatin drowned. This could have been a triple drowning.
This is a short drive from Kamloops and involved a international student from Thompson Rivers University.
Braden jumped from the bridge, unaware of the submerged hazards in the water close to the surface. His body was not recovered for several months.
Why are there no concrete barriers at the end of these roads that terminate at the river bank? This is an easy, simple fix that would prevent this from happening again. This could have been 5 people dead if the rescue had gone wrong. Kamloops has some very brave people!
